2012 Ironman Hawaii – First Day of Play

We were so psyched to be here in Hawaii we woke up really early to get down to dig-me beach for a swim in the morning with Scot Calendar.  We started out by the huge Banyon tree right down by the swim transition.
Even at 6:45 AM there was a huge group of people gathering to get in the water at Dig-me beach. We got in the water and it felt warm with cool currents occasionally.   After swimming past a couple of large orange buoys we came upon a large boat that was serving Kona coffee to the swimmers. We had to stop and check it out because it was where all the action was…

Sara and Scot wanted to swim farther so I turned around to go back. It was surreal: Picture this in your mind…. The mountains are dark with some haze over them, there are clouds in the sky but the sun is starting to shine brightly through onto the water.    Looking down into the water I could see fish swimming below me. So it was awesome between breaths seeing the sun shining in and the view below the water.

In the afternoon we went to “Turtle Beach” to do some snorkeling in the calm waters. We were able to cruise around in the water with these awesome guys as they fed….

We snorkeled around in the water and saw tons of great fish and more turtles…

Snorkeling Video with Turtles and Fish…

What an awesome day and tomorrow is the Hawaii Ironman…better get some sleep
