This was our second sailing class for the year with West Wind Sailing and we took it for two reasons, 1) We wanted to get more practice and learn the Jib sail and 2) We are required to take two courses in order to take out the boats on our own…
In the second class we learned how to rig and maneuver the Jib sail – the smaller sail in the front. The Jib sail feeds wind into the main and helps maintain momentum when tacking across the wind. It is really handy to have two people when introducing another sail in these small boats so one person and skipper with the rudder and main and another can move the Jib sail from side to side when Taking and Jibbing.
When going on a run (bow is away from the wind, being pushed by the wind) both sails are all the way out with as much surface of the sail open to catch the wind. When you have two sails the main sail and the jib sail can be set on opposite sides of the boat to catch as much wind as possible as we did below…so fun and fast if the conditions are right..
Here are some shots of us and the other boat in our class..Thanks so Foxy our instructor for giving us such great pointers to get betterĀ and always keeping us safe..
