Idyllwild Suicide Rock – climbing day

My friend John and I drove out this morning to Idyllwild to do some climbing on Suicide Rock. We parked and were happy to see that there wasn’t anyone parked close to the trail.

The book says an easy hike and not sure who wrote that 🙂 but it was a pretty short hike from the road to the base of Suicide. It was mostly up and with gear definitely build up a sweat.

We decided to do the Surprise 3 pitch climb first.. and see how the day went

We setup and John (who is leading) set out for the first Belay station. The first section went well and I setup to belay John to the second belay section about the middle of he white area to the left.

This had one 5.8 section that hung both John and I up looking for good foot hold because there wasn’t much for our hands…

At the second belay station we could see Tahquitz Rock very clearly. You can see it over my shoulder from my spot at belay station 2 below…

The third climbing section didn’t have any bolts so John had to lay protection in the cracks on the way up. We got to the top, checked out the view and setup for our rappel down.

We did two rappels and a pretty sketchy down climb to get back to the place where we started.

Awesome weather and the great time out on the rocks with my friend John.
