Manta Dive – Big Island, Hawaii

While in Hawaii to watch the Ironman Triathlon we really wanted to get in some diving; so we chose to do an afternoon and a night dive for something new and exciting.

The afternoon dive was right off the coast from the Kona airport on a reef shelf that was somewhat protected. It was great to be down under the water again, we dove to about 65 feet and the visibility was at least 60 – 70 feet.

Looking out at the Sunset we knew the fun was just starting. We were starting our prep for the night dive to visit the world of the Manta Rays.

The night dive was in the same general location and the goal was to see Manta Rays as they fed off of the plankton attracted to our lights in the dark water. As we descended from the boat down to what the guides called the “campfire” it looked like a scene from the movie “the Abyss” with lights shining up and the Rays flying around as if airborne. We found our place on the bottom and got comfortable to watch the show…
