Today we wanted to get out on the water and find a white sandy beach to play in and Tortuga (Turtle) Island fits this description. It is not called Tortuga because you see lots of turtles but because the island silhouette looks like a turtle, we will find another instance of naming based on a silhouette up in Arenal.
We were picked up by Dimas (our friendly tour guy) at the front of the hotel where he drove us to our awaiting boat to Tortuga. In a couple of minutes we were loaded and on our way for about a 45 minute boat ride to Tortuga
Our first stop was a snorkel spot about 5 minutes from Tortuga beach near some large rocks in the ocean. They anchored the boat and we all got ready to go….
There were fish and sea creatures around however because the visibility was not very good, you had to work to see them under the water. The water is really warm so you don’t mind just jumping in and swimming around to look for things…h

Next it was back on the boat and off to Tortuga for the afternoon. The beach is in stark difference to the mainland with its black volcanic sand, Tortuga is white sand and coral water….
We walked off the boat and onto the sand to an area with tables where we could leave our stuff and start playing.. here is a view of the beach from there….
Bob and the boys brought a Frisbee to play with so we were off (after tons of sunscreen) to play on the sand..
After playing for alittle while Sara and I convince Bob and Charlene to swim to a close neighboring island. It wan’t that far but with the water being so warm and a steady current it was some work….
After all that playing we were plenty hungry and the these guys did not let us down. We had Marlin(fish) and rice and some of the best pineapple we have tasted….
Greg was a bit overzealous with the pineapple – Ha! but man was it great!
We had a great day on the island and beach..man we felt a long way from the jungle today
